There are countless types of generating sets in just as many versions and options, each with their specific advantages and disadvantages. So how can you choose the best power generator for your application?

Start your search with this checklist or let the generating set specialists from NENS Power work it out together with you, with no obligation.

The checklist

  • A fixed installation or a mobile generator that you can regularly move such as compact IBC generators with fork lift truck slots?
  • Will the generating set remain in place for a short period (e.g. festival) or a long time (e.g. on site)? In places prone to vandalism or theft a lockable 10ft or 20ft container with integrated generators will give more peace of mind.
  • In residential zones (e.g. for electricity supply during renovation) you are best to check the noise level! How many decibels does the generator produce and is it silent enough for the neighbours?

Tip!
You can hire super silent generating sets from NENS Power that only produce 81 to 97 dBA (depending on the power). Make sure there is good ventilation and/or a suitable flue gas outlet if you are installing the set indoors!

  • What equipment will you connect to the power generator? Single-phase 230V generators are suitable for most household appliances and small electrical hand tools, 3-phase 400V generators for professional equipment such as compressors, welding equipment, etc…
  • The peak current coefficient is also a factor. Electrical appliances require more power on start-up than during use. Sometimes as much as 2x the normal Watt power. Simultaneous start up may exceed the maximum capacity of the set. So connect appliances one by one (the greatest peak current first).

Tip!
Is the power requirement constant or variable? If the appliances connected run for varying times and for short periods, a generator set-up with automatic control can cope with varying peak power levels synchronously.

  • For applications where you only need substantial power from time to time, with quiet periods in between, a battery generating set with invertor generator is certainly worth considering. In this way you avoid unnecessary fuel consumption in the quiet periods. There are however limitations as regards power and the batteries must be charged from time to time. Let the generating set specialists at NENS Power advise you so that you can make the right choices and considerations for your project and choose the best power generator.

The bigger the fuel tank, the less often you have to refill. Would you also like to rent an external fuel tank?
